| Course Overview |
How has literature changed since the invention of photography in the first half of the 19th century? Photography, as Walter Benjamin describes, is a "technology of reproduction" and a technical medium closely related to memory and recording. The camera enables reproduction with a level of precision that is impossible to achieve with a painter’s brush. How has literature been stimulated by the emergence of this new medium, and what new rhetoric, style, and narrative techniques has been developed? In this lecture, we will explore the relationship between literature and photography through literary texts and photographic theories from the 19th to the 21st century. |
