| Course Overview |
Like the 20th-century American writer Ernest Hemingway, Kurt Vonnegut, a writer from the Midwest, aimed to become a writer through the world of journalism. He is one of the representative writers of 20th-century American literature, continuously depicting the absurdity of World War II and the Cold War, the mass consumption society after Pax Americana, and the relationship between technology and humans with motifs reminiscent of science fiction and a witty journalistic style. This course will focus on his early short stories (along with cross-media perspectives such as films, photographs, and science fiction of the time) to explore the concept of 'Americanness' during the golden age of the late 1940s to the 1950s. |
