Course Overview If there is a sense of stagnation in the traditional methods of studying Japanese classical literature, one of the major reasons is that they have only used existing edited texts. With the development of digital technology, images of a huge number of classical books from around the world are now available on the Internet, making them easily accessible to anyone for research, and expanding the possibilities for new research. It would be a waste to remain within the framework of traditional research. In order to conduct new and deeper research, it is necessary to deal effectively with the vast amount of digital data, but knowledge of books as a medium for preserving literary texts is essential. Even when looking at the same digital image, there is a large difference in the amount and quality of information obtained between those who have knowledge of books and those who do not.
In order to acquire knowledge of Japanese classical books that can be adapted to the digital age, this lecture will touch on actual materials from the Nara period to the Edo period, and will mainly explain the types of paper used to make books, the form of books, and the correlation between the binding and the text preserved therein. It will also introduce the key points of classical book research and concrete ways to apply knowledge of books to classical research.
