| Course Overview |
In this lecture, we will analyze how the Japanese Jesuits in the 16th and 17th centuries and the Anglo-American Protestants in China and Japan in the 19th century translated religious books and the Bible from various perspectives: textual analysis at the level of original and translation, relationship with missionary policies such as “adaptation,” relationship with the target language and classical studies conducted for the translation The study will be analyzed from various perspectives, including the following. In addition, we will examine the role of translation in the organization of language in a society by placing the Bible translation projects in multilingual regions such as the Ottoman Empire and India in the context of the translation of the Bible. We hope that this class will provide an opportunity to consider the multifaceted nature of translation, not only from the perspective of the transmission of accurate information, but also from other perspectives. |
