| Course Overview |
Hesiod's epic poems, Theogony and Works & Days will be examined, and their later reception will be discussed. Creation myth in ancient Oriental literature and the Old Testament, and Homeric epics will be considered as backgrounds. The role of the Earth (Gaia) in Hesiod's epics will be closely examined. As for the later reception, Aeschylus's Prometheus Bound, pictorial depictions of Prometheus in Greek and Roman art and in modern European art, representation of Prometheus in German literature and English literature will be discussed. The above mentioned literary works and visual arts will be examined through the lecture and through discussions by all the participants from various perspectives. |
