Course Overview In this class, we will examine the historical significance of the Civil War (Civil War 1861-65) from the perspective of "continental history," which has been attracting attention in recent 19th century American history. While traditional American history has described the history of the United States as a modern state, in recent years there seems to be a growing tendency to focus on the imperial character of the United States since the colonial period, and to take a longer-term view of the current state of the United States, where social divisions are becoming increasingly severe. The perspective of "continental history" is also a new trend in the study of 19th century American history that is consistent with these recent trends. In class, students will read research book that view the Civil War from the perspective of continental history to deepen their understanding of new interpretations of 19th century American history.
