Course Overview This course mainly examines the economic history of Japan during a very short period from the 1850s to the 1870s. This period corresponds to the so-called “Meiji Restoration”, a time of major changes in political and economic structure. The economic structure of Japan during the transition to the modern era will be reviewed, and the relationship between the management of individual merchant families and the fiscal and monetary policies of the shogunate, han, and the new Meiji government will be discussed.
