Course Overview This year’s course will focus on the Eastern Orthodox Church, one of the oldest branches of Christianity. The images we often associate with Christianity—such as the loving Virgin Mary, chubby and charming angels, grand pipe organs, and beautiful stained glass—are actually part of the Europeanized version of Christianity. This course aims to deepen our basic understanding of the Eastern Orthodox Church, exploring its historical background, theology, rituals, doctrines, and the role of the Church in the modern world. We will also consider the influence and presence of the Eastern Orthodox Church in non-Christian societies, including Japan.
