Course Overview Twentieth-Century Poetry: Philip Larkin and Seamus Heaney

On this course we shall be reading a selection of the work of the two most popular British and Irish poets of the twentieth century: the English poet Philip Larkin (1922-1985), and the Northern Irish poet Seamus Heaney (1939-2013). We shall read and discuss one or two poems each week. All members of the class will be expected to have read the poem/s, and to contribute to class discussion. We shall also discuss the literary, biographical, historical and political context of the poems, reading poetry that influenced Larkin and Heaney. By the end of this course, students will have a thorough knowledge of two key figures of twentieth-century British and Irish poetry.
