McTeague is Frank Norris's masterpiece and a central work in American Naturalism. Influenced by French writer Émile Zola and written within the framework of social Darwinism that was widely prevalent at the time, this novel was originally based on an actual incident. The compelling narrative depicts a good-natured man who gradually degenerates into a violent beast who ultimately commits murder.
