Course Overview This lecture introduces the Persian language while also focusing on the culture and society of the perinate world. Today, Persian is an official language in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Historically, it was more widely used across the western parts of the islamicate world, from east of Iraq to the Indian subcontinent and Central Eurasia, making it the lingua franca of bureaucratic and cultural domains. In this course, students will improve their understanding of Persian grammar, focusing on its syntactic and lexical connections with Arabic and Turkish. Additionally, this lecture explores Persianate culture and society, especially in Iran, through the analysis of visual materials.
