Course Overview Course Overview
This course focuses on specialized research in Western art before the modern era (approximately up to the 19th century). Among the various fields in art history, this period has accumulated the most extensive body of research. Throughout the course, students will explore the key scholarly approaches and ongoing research within this field.

Prerequisites
This lecture assumes that students already have a foundational understanding of Western art. If you feel uncertain about your background knowledge, you are encouraged to supplement your studies by auditing the "Introduction to Art Studies" course offered in the general education program. Alternatively, you may prepare in advance by referring to History of Western Art (edited by Akira Akiyama and Masayuki Tanaka, Bijutsu Shuppansha, 2021).

Course Structure
This course is conducted as a single, continuous subject alongside the quarter-based course of the same name, designated as A/B in the course numbering system. As a general rule, students are expected to enroll on a semester basis. However, if you wish to take the course on a quarter basis due to special circumstances such as studying abroad, you must submit a request in advance.

Expectations
Students are expected to actively engage with the specialized research presented in the course and develop a deeper understanding of how Western art has been studied historically.
