| Course Overview |
The main theme and goal of this course is to develop an overall picture of the "Japanese intellectual history" that Watsuji Tetsuro (1889-1960) worked on throughout his life, as well as to deepen the understanding of "what is intellectual history research in the first place". In this seminar class, we will examine the methodology and historical image assumed in his research. First, we will read the article "The Japanese Spirit" (1930) to confirm Watsuji's own methodological reflections and his way of perceiving and imagining the "history of ideas," and then we will examine how these were finally conceived in his History of Japanese Ethical Thought (1952). |
