| Course Overview |
This course examines the multifaceted dimensions of Buddhist thought, which has played a foundational role in shaping the ethical and philosophical traditions of Japan. Through critical engagement with primary texts, students will explore the distinctive ideas of representative thinkers from antiquity to the early modern period. In addition, the course offers a comparative overview of Indian and Chinese Buddhist traditions—both of which profoundly influenced the development of Japanese Buddhism. By tracing these historical and conceptual lineages, students will gain insight into the core philosophical features that define Buddhist modes of thought and their enduring impact on Japanese intellectual culture. |
