Numbering Code: LET-HUM2702J Course Code: 2024 SpringTerm weekly Mon4 Ito Classroom E/J科目 (日本語, English) |
Course Overview |
As a sub-discipline of humanities, linguistics seeks to uncover human nature by focusing on language. It tries to answer the fundamental question of what constitute grammar as it is internalized in all human beings and how it is related to the grammar of each individual language. It also explores the relationship between language and its speakers who use it. These questions must be addressed by dealing with empirical data from diverse languages upon which linguistic theories are based. This class examines some of such fundamental questions and different approaches of linguistics whereby students will be able to have a basic understanding of linguistics and have a further interest in this field of study. |

Course Overview |
This semester, we will give a lesson on the construction of "Clan Archive Studies" in the field of the Hirado Domain in the early modern period. Hirado was an international trading port where Christianity was quickly propagated and the Dutch and English factories existed in the early modern period. Since the establishment of the so-called "鎖国(Sakoku)", the whaling industry and the development of agricultural land led by the clan have risen. On the cultural side, a ceramic industry centered on the "三河内(Mikawachi)" area also took place, and a tea ceremony called "鎮信流(Chin-Shin-Ryu)" was also developed. Furthermore, from the middle of the 18th century to the end of the Edo period, literary daimyo such as "松浦静山(Matsura Seizan)" and "松浦熈(Matsura Hirom)" appeared. The existence of such daimyo has led to the creation of long daimyo essays such as "平戸藩楽歳堂文庫(Hirado-han Rakusaido-Bunko)", "甲子夜話(Kasshi Yawa)" (Volume 278), and "亀岡随筆(Kameoka Zuihitsu)" (Volume 80), which are characteristic of foreign book collections. In addition, "楠本端山(Kusumoto Tanzan)", a scholar of the Hirado Domain, collected a huge amount of Chinese books with his younger brother, "碩水(Sekisui)". Currently, Kyushu University holds a large number of documents and Chinese books that have been handed down to the "楠本(Kusumoto)" family. Against the background of the above history, various documents created and managed in the Hirado domain are included in the "Clan Archive". On top of that, (1) quantitative grasp of the recorded materials that make up the domain archive, (2) extraction of record recognition of the recording subject (lord, domain scholar, scholar, townsman, fisherman, etc.), (3) characteristics of archives in the Hirado domain Aim to elucidate. |

Exploring Yoga Meditation: An In-depth Study through English Texts This course delves into the sections on meditation, particularly focusing on "Withdrawal" (Dharana), "Contemplation" (Dhyana or Zen), and "Absorption" (Samadhi), as presented in "Roots of Yoga," translated and edited by James Mallinson and Mark Singleton, published by Penguin Classics. The format resembles a seminar where the instructor primarily speaks while students listen and engage. Alongside discussing the content in English, we will simultaneously explore the corresponding Japanese translations provided by me. Due to the detailed nature of the study, progress might be slower compared to conventional lectures. This course is suitable for individuals who wish to understand yoga and its meditation practices thoroughly in both English and Japanese, particularly those interested in exploring nuances and latest research findings. We will also evaluate the accuracy of machine translations. As there's currently no comprehensive Japanese resource available on this subject, the aim of this course is to facilitate understanding through English texts. No Japanese translation exists yet, so the content will consist solely of the latest information not widely circulated in Japanese academia. Course materials will be provided, but purchasing the book is recommended for future reference, given its affordability. Additionally, other chapters not covered in this session also contain significant information. The objective is to absorb scholarly research on yoga literature through English. While primarily targeting students of Indian philosophical history, explanations will be accessible even to students from other disciplines without prior knowledge of Sanskrit. This course offers a chance for anyone interested in yoga to absorb the latest academic findings. Evaluation will be based on written submissions at the end of each class, with no final exam. |

Course Overview |
I will be conducting a lecture related to specialized research on Western art prior to the modern era (up to around the 19th century). This period of Western art is one of the most extensively studied fields in art history. Students will understand the types of research being conducted in this area. The lecture will proceed on the assumption that you have a basic understanding of Western art. If you have any concerns about this, please consider attending the “Introduction to Art Studies” course offered by the instructor as part of the core curriculum to supplement your knowledge. The semester-long course and the quarter-long course with the same name will be conducted as the same course. Students in the quarter system should generally take the course on a semester basis. If you have special circumstances, such as studying abroad, and wish to take the course on a quarter basis, please notify us in advance. |

Course Overview |
Buddhist statue is primarily defined as the three-dimensional representation of the Buddha, Bodhisattva, or heavenly being, who is the object of Buddhist worship. In this respect, it is no different from other statues for worship. However, Japanese Buddhist statues have a character that goes beyond that, and this has led to the diverse development of the history of Buddhist statues. The characteristic character of Japanese Buddhist statues, which goes beyond general statues for worship, is that while they represent Buddhas who exist in a different world of time and space, they have their own individual personalities and exert power on people. In Japan, a huge number of ancient Buddhas have been passed down by human hands to the present day, and this seems to be largely due to this characteristic of Buddhist statues. In this class, we will start from the basic question of what a Buddhist statue is, and then look at many examples of how Buddhist statues have been made, worshiped, or used, mainly in Japan, and how they have been passed down over the long years. Specific topics will include materials and techniques used in Buddhist statues, the act of Buddhist statue production as a ritual, the functions of statues within temples, making replicas, shielding statues from pilgrim’s eyes, placing items inside statues, repairs and restorations, etc. In addition, a practical tour will be used to explain how to closely observe the work to confirm various information and create a report, which is an essential task in researching Buddhist statues. |

Course Overview |
This lecture will focus on the Timurid dynasty (1370-1507) and explain its role in the eastern part of the Islamic world, centered on Iran and Central Asia, from various perspectives including politics, culture, religion, and society. Timur, the founder of the dynasty, established a government in western Central Asia in the late 14th century, and after conducting a series of active expeditions, he succeeded in assuming control of vast areas including Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan. However, after Timur's death, the dynasty was often divided due to the competitons for succession, and from the outside it was invaded by surrounding nomadic groups, and its territory gradually shrank, until it finally fell down about 140 years after its founding. As mentioned above, the Timurid dynasty was politically unstable except for the period ruled by Timur and some of his successors. On the other hand, Islamic culture reached it's peak in the Timurid era especially around Herat, which was one of the capitals of this dynasty. Even after the fall of the dynasty, this cultural heritage would be inherited by the newly established regimes in Iran and surrounding areas. Also, during the Timurid period, religious changes after the Mongol invasion deepened, and the Mahdi movements frequently occurred. It is said that these various religious changes gave rise to new political ideas, which eventually led to the rise of the Safavi order and the establishment of the Safavid dynasty. In particular, the latter feature of religious changes have been actively researched recently, mainly in academic circles in USA. This lecture will also introduce recent trends in research on the Timurid dynasty. |

The German poet Goethe is often referred to as "one of the most important figures in the history of European civilization". This is due, in part, to the fact that he was clearly aware of his mission and accomplished many important works in the flow of civilization from ancient Greece to ancient Rome, through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque period to the modern era. On the other hand, from such an awareness of the history of civilization, he deeply sensed the essence of modern natural scientific civilization that began in 17th century Western Europe and the crisis in it and continued to issue sharp criticisms of civilization and alternative academic and civilizational theories. In this course, I would like to lecture on Goethe's work so that students will be able to understand the meanings of his work in the history of civilization. |
