Course Overview In this course, we will examine how racial slavery has been understood in the development of early American history from multiple perspectives. As is well known, a system of slavery that brutally exploited Africans as a labor force was introduced into the Americas from the sixteenth century onward, but the British North American colonies after the late seventeenth century were distinctive in that this system was transformed into “racial slavery.” How did the practice of marking off particular groups under the category of “race” and transmitting enslaved status hereditarily become established and institutionalized? How did it shape economic activity and social order in the British North American colonies, and in what ways did it orient the formation of the United States that would later emerge? In this course, we will explore these questions with reference to recent debates in the scholarly literature.

The content of this course includes the mechanisms of human sensation and perception and their disorders, as well as the mechanisms of human cognition and thinking, and their disorders.

Course Overview Ernest Hemingway is one of the defining authors of the twentieth century and a central figure in American modernist literature. He is known for many works, including The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Old Man and the Sea, yet the view that his finest achievements lie in his early short fiction is widely shared among scholars. In this seminar, offered as separate courses in the first and second semesters, students will engage with Hemingway's short stories written primarily in the 1920s—including "Indian Camp" and "Big Two-Hearted River"—and undertake close readings of these masterpieces of American prose, crafted with consummate skill by the young Hemingway.
The course has two main objectives. The first is to read the works with rigorous attention to detail and to discuss in class what issues have been at stake in the critical history surrounding them and what new interpretations might be possible. Through this process, students will learn the importance of close reading not only in relation to Hemingway but to literary works more broadly.
The second objective is to translate selected passages from the works and discuss as a group what constitutes an appropriate rendering in Japanese. Through this translation work, students will pursue a deeper understanding of the texts while also gaining an introduction to translation studies, a field that has increasingly established itself as an independent area of scholarly inquiry in recent years.

Course Overview Cultural memory studies is an interdisciplinary field of research that examines the social construction of the past. It is based on the assumption that images of the past are always constructed from the perspective of, and in response to needs of, the present. This course introduces central concepts in memory studies, such as collective memory and its social frameworks, communicative and cultural memory, processes of canonization, the media of cultural memory, the invention of tradition, and sites of memory. These concepts are illustrated with concrete case studies from Japan.

This course would cover linguistic processes that are involved in language contact, which affect the morphology, syntax, phonology and lexicon of a language, with a focus on their effects on English varieties around the world. We would also look at the sociolinguistic and historic circumstances that have led to English’s status today as a pluricentric and global lingua franca.

Course Overview The intellectual history of the Song and Ming periods developed through the complex interweaving of Zhu Xi learning (Lixue, the Learning of Principle) and the Lu–Wang school (Xinxue, the Learning of the Mind). The relationship between these two traditions has been debated in various ways since the Ming dynasty under the rubrics of the “Zhu–Lu Debate” and “Zhu–Lu Discourse.”

In this seminar, we will closely read primary sources related to the Zhu–Lu Debate in order to examine how the relationship between Zhu Xi learning (Lixue) and the Lu–Wang school (Xinxue) has been historically understood, thereby deepening our comprehension of Song–Ming intellectual history.

Course Overview This semester, we will give a lesson on the construction of "Clan Archive Studies" in the field of the Hirado Domain in the early modern period. Hirado was an international trading port where Christianity was quickly propagated and the Dutch and English factories existed in the early modern period. Since the establishment of the so-called "鎖国(Sakoku)", the whaling industry and the development of agricultural land led by the clan have risen. On the cultural side, a ceramic industry centered on the "三河内(Mikawachi)" area also took place, and a tea ceremony called "鎮信流(Chin-Shin-Ryu)" was also developed. Furthermore, from the middle of the 18th century to the end of the Edo period, literary daimyo such as "松浦静山(Matsura Seizan)" and "松浦熈(Matsura Hirom)" appeared. The existence of such daimyo has led to the creation of long daimyo essays such as "平戸藩楽歳堂文庫(Hirado-han Rakusaido-Bunko)", "甲子夜話(Kasshi Yawa)" (Volume 278), and "亀岡随筆(Kameoka Zuihitsu)" (Volume 80), which are characteristic of foreign book collections. In addition, "楠本端山(Kusumoto Tanzan)", a scholar of the Hirado Domain, collected a huge amount of Chinese books with his younger brother, "碩水(Sekisui)". Currently, Kyushu University holds a large number of documents and Chinese books that have been handed down to the "楠本(Kusumoto)" family. Against the background of the above history, various documents created and managed in the Hirado domain are included in the "Clan Archive". On top of that, (1) quantitative grasp of the recorded materials that make up the domain archive, (2) extraction of record recognition of the recording subject (lord, domain scholar, scholar, townsman, fisherman, etc.), (3) characteristics of archives in the Hirado domain Aim to elucidate.

Course Overview This course reads the recent French book Qu'est-ce que la philosophie indienne ? by Vincent Eltschinger and Isabelle Ratié. Students will use a Japanese translation prepared by the instructor, so knowledge of French is not required.

The class explores major debates in Indian philosophy—such as the self, consciousness, knowledge, language, and God—through close reading and discussion. The pace will be slow because the course focuses on the actual philosophical arguments rather than a general historical overview.

Students will submit a short written response at the end of each class, and the course will also consider how AI tools can be used in the study of Indian philosophy and Sanskrit sources.

Course Overview This course examines the question of modernity in East Asia, with particular attention to the modernity of Korea (present-day South and North Korea). Korean modernity was shaped through the historical experience of Japanese colonial rule, and understanding this process is essential for considering contemporary relations between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. These historical dynamics have also influenced East Asia as a whole, including China, as well as its relations with Western countries such as the United States.
What kind of space was the Korean Peninsula from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century? How was it perceived by those who lived through that era? This course approaches these questions by focusing on people’s everyday lives, value systems, and the discourses of intellectuals. By examining colonial Korea through the eyes of contemporaries, students will explore the broader problem of modernity in East Asia.
The course places particular emphasis on the “Cultural Rule” period (1920s) in colonial Korea. In the aftermath of the First World War, the global order entered a period of reorganization, and independence movements spread across the colonies of imperial powers. In Korea, the March First Independence Movement of 1919 led to harsh suppression, drawing severe criticism from the international community toward Japan’s colonial rule. Thereafter, Japan proclaimed a shift in colonial governance under the banner of the “extension of the metropole,” announcing a transition from the military-backed rule of the 1910s to the so-called “Cultural Rule” of the 1920s.
Drawing on the writings and records of Korean intellectuals who lived during the Cultural Rule period, this course examines the historical, cultural, and social dimensions of colonial Korea from the perspective of the colonized. Through close readings of textual and visual sources, students will develop their own perspectives on Korean modernity within East Asia, as well as on the nature of Japanese modernity.

Course Overview Shirley Jackson occupies a unique position in twentieth-century American literature. Known for short stories such as "The Lottery" and novels including We Have Always Lived in the Castle, she demonstrated exceptional skill in depicting the anxiety and terror that lurk beneath the surface of everyday life. Among her works, The Haunting of Hill House, published in 1959, stands as one of the finest achievements in American Gothic fiction and has exerted a profound influence on subsequent writers, Stephen King among them. In this seminar, students will undertake a close reading of The Haunting of Hill House over the course of one semester, carefully examining Jackson's meticulous prose technique and narrative structure.
The course has two main objectives. The first is to read the text with rigorous attention to detail, closely examining such matters as narrative method, symbolic expression, and the effects of ambiguity. Jackson's prose, while seemingly straightforward on the surface, is replete with devices that subtly unsettle the reader's perception. By reading with care and precision, students will experience firsthand how richly rewarding the close reading of a literary work can be.
The second objective is to attempt a reading from the perspective of feminist criticism. The isolation and loss of selfhood experienced by the protagonist, Eleanor Vance, and the image of a woman confined within the space of a house are deeply intertwined with questions of gender in 1950s American society. Drawing on the work of contemporary feminists, the course will explore how this novel depicts the oppression of women and the struggle for female agency, seeking new interpretive possibilities at the intersection of Gothic literature and feminist criticism.

However, even when expressed under this single label, the concept varies in content and nuance across different periods and thinkers, and therefore requires careful examination.

This course aims to deepen students’ understanding of Chinese thought by clarifying the various forms of the “unity of all things” view in China and tracing its historical development.

Course Overview This course consists of lectures related to specialized research on Western art prior to the modern period (up to around the nineteenth century).

Western art of this era represents one of the most extensively researched fields within art history. Students are expected to gain an understanding of the kinds of scholarly research that have been conducted in this area.

The A/B-designated quarter courses bearing the same title are offered as a single, continuous course. In principle, students should enroll for the full semester. If, due to special circumstances such as studying abroad, you wish to enroll for only one quarter, you must inform the instructor in advance.

In the first half (corresponding to A), we will discuss fundamental topics in Western art history. These are matters that students in this program are expected to understand thoroughly. Please study them carefully. Even students who do not take this course are expected to acquire equivalent knowledge independently, regardless of their graduation thesis topic. Without a solid grasp of these fundamentals, it will not be possible to provide appropriate guidance in seminars or at the Friday colloquium.

In B, we will address more advanced topics based on current scholarly interests at that time.

Course Overview "Nihon-shoki", written in 720, is a history of the ancient ritsuryo (law-enforcement) state, and as the first authentic history of Japan from the age of myth to the end of the 7th century, it was emphasized in later periods. In the process, various stories and works were derived from it, sometimes under the name of 'Nihon-gi'. This course will begin with an overview of the content of the "Nihon-shoki", followed by a broad introduction to the discourses derived from the "Nihon-shok" and an overview of their diachronic development and expansion. Through these lessons, the goal is to understand some of the meanings that ancient literature has continued to have throughout the history of Japanese literature.
