Course Overview In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of creating, organizing, searching, summarizing, and visualizing tabular data for humanities research using Microsoft Excel.

The course is designed for students with little or no prior experience with Excel and therefore begins with basic operations involving cells, rows, columns, and formulas. Rather than focusing solely on learning how to use Excel, the course emphasizes understanding the difference between “documents that are easy for humans to read” and “data that are easy for computers to process,” and on transforming humanities materials into data suitable for analysis.

In each class, the first 60 minutes will be devoted to reviewing the previous lesson and explaining new material, while the remaining 30 minutes will be used for hands-on exercises with actual Excel files.
