| Course Overview |
American Gothic This course will examine the gothic mode in American short stories and novel excerpts across time and genre, and the ways in which America's past haunts the present day. Some of the authors we will read include Edgar Alan Poe, Herman Melville, William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Joyce Carol Oates, and more. The term "gothic" will be used flexibly, and applied to stories that are not always strictly within the gothic genre, but that still have gothic elements. The teacher will choose the first few readings, but students will take an active part in choosing stories and making presentations about the authors and background materials, taking the role of teacher for part of the lesson. Grading will be based on these presentations, a midterm test, a final essay, and a final exam, as well as general participation. |
