Course Overview Cultural memory studies is an interdisciplinary field of research that examines the social construction of the past. It is based on the assumption that images of the past are always constructed from the perspective of, and in response to needs of, the present. This course builds on the concepts learned in International Humanities IIIA, which students are required to complete before registering for this course. The course introduces additional concepts in memory studies, such as the invention of tradition and sites of memory, and illustrate these concepts with concrete case studies from Japan.
