| Course Overview |
The theme of this course is "The Sociology of Youth in Urban and Regional Contexts." Its aim is to re-examine and develop sociological research on youth through the lens of urban and regional dynamics. While youth studies traditionally evolved to capture phenomena in densely populated areas during periods of rapid urban growth, new perspectives are now required in light of the recent transition to a post-growth society, population decline, and the development of the web society. Building upon these theoretical perspectives, this lecture examines transformations in young people's lives and work, as well as issues of disparity and mobility, with a particular focus on variations across urban and regional contexts. Furthermore, utilizing the keyword "interstices" (sukima), the course explores the role of cities and regions for youth experiencing the "difficulty of living" (ikizurasa) within mainstream lifestyles. |
