| Course Overview |
Clinical interviews are fundamentally grounded in the relationship between the client and the therapist within the consulting room. Clinical psychology has long been criticized for remaining confined within the consulting room and failing to engage with the world beyond it. While this criticism is valid, it is also undeniable that clinical work is founded primarily on interviews conducted within the consulting room. For clinical practice within the consulting room to function effectively, activities outside the consulting room are equally important. In other words, activities beyond the consulting room are undertaken in order to support effective clinical work within it. Such activities can be understood as occurring at several different levels. One of these involves learning how to navigate organizations and systems effectively. Traditionally, discussions of activities outside the consulting room have tended to focus on this level. However, when navigating an organization or system effectively conflicts with the interests of the client, there have been few opportunities to consider how an individual therapist should respond. When pursued further, this question inevitably leads to issues of policy.Based on this concern, this course provisionally explores an as-yet-unestablished field called “Clinical Psychology Policy Studies.” Through this exploration, students will reconsider the conditions necessary for clinical psychological practice to function in a genuinely effective manner. |
