| Course Overview |
How has East Asia been constituted through historical relationships? What can ceramics, musical instruments, legal records, medical texts, maps, and accounts of captivity reveal about experiences that are difficult to capture through histories of states and dynasties alone? This course explores these questions through cases drawn mainly from Ming and Qing China, Chosŏn Korea, and Japan between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries, including their connections with Inner Asia and Southeast Asia. Drawing primarily on scholarship published since 2000, the course examines empire and frontiers, material culture, the senses and emotions, gender, bodies and medicine, environments, mobility, science and technology, and historical memory. Students will consider how different questions and methods change interpretations of the past, and assess the uses and limits of national, regional, comparative, and connected histories. Selected modern cases provide comparisons and illuminate later uses of the past. |
