Course Overview This course closely examines the diaries of Sakatani Yoshiro (1863–1941) and develops the knowledge and analytical methods necessary for the study of modern Japanese history, while also improving students’ ability to read handwritten cursive texts (kuzushiji, including pen-written script).
In the Autumn Quarter (XVIIA), students will work collectively to transcribe the Diary of Sakatani Yoshiro, beginning with the entry for January 1, 1923, and proceeding sequentially through the text. Students are required to submit a transcription worksheet for each class meeting. Through the revision and correction of their transcriptions in class, students will acquire fundamental skills in reading and interpreting modern handwritten documents.
In the Winter Quarter (XVIIB), the transcribed text produced during the Autumn Quarter will be divided among the participants. Each student will investigate the vocabulary, personal names, content, and related historical issues found in the assigned section, and will present the results of that research in class.
