Course Overview Within the realm of East Asian art, the development of Chinese painting has consistently remained central, both technically and conceptually. In this lecture, we shall first provide an overview of the fundamentals by tracing the history of Chinese painting in its entirety. Building on this, we shall examine the characteristics of Chinese paintings introduced to Japan from the medieval period onwards, using this as a starting point for considering their relationship with Japanese art in a comparative context. Furthermore, drawing on specific examples from exhibitions, we shall introduce diverse approaches to the actual works, focusing on Chinese paintings held in Japanese collections.
