| Course Overview |
The intellectual history of the Song and Ming periods developed through the complex interweaving of Zhu Xi learning (Lixue, the Learning of Principle) and the Lu–Wang school (Xinxue, the Learning of the Mind). The relationship between these two traditions has been debated in various ways since the Ming dynasty under the rubrics of the “Zhu–Lu Debate” and “Zhu–Lu Discourse.” In this seminar, we will closely read primary sources related to the Zhu–Lu Debate in order to examine how the relationship between Zhu Xi learning (Lixue) and the Lu–Wang school (Xinxue) has been historically understood, thereby deepening our comprehension of Song–Ming intellectual history. |
