Course Overview “Li” (Principle), together with “qi” (material force), constitutes one of the core concepts in traditional Chinese thought. In particular, the concept of li is indispensable for understanding Song–Ming intellectual history.

This course examines in what senses li has been conceptualized within Chinese philosophy and what theoretical functions it has performed. By tracing its historical development, the course aims to foster a deeper and more nuanced understanding of Chinese thought.
