Course Overview This course reads the recent French book Qu'est-ce que la philosophie indienne ? by Vincent Eltschinger and Isabelle Ratié. Students will use a Japanese translation prepared by the instructor, so knowledge of French is not required.

The class explores major debates in Indian philosophy—such as the self, consciousness, knowledge, language, and God—through close reading and discussion. The pace will be slow because the course focuses on the actual philosophical arguments rather than a general historical overview.

Students will submit a short written response at the end of each class, and the course will also consider how AI tools can be used in the study of Indian philosophy and Sanskrit sources.
