Course Overview Through a study of material and visual cultures of Japan from the third millennium BCE through the early 20th century, course participants will acquire and develop practical specialist knowledge and skills needed for further research in premodern and early modern Japanese art and cultural history.
Sessions will introduce important cultural moments and monuments that have come to define Japan and critique the historiography of their reception. It will introduce examples of paintings, statues, gardens, temples, shrines, and issues relating to culture and artistic production, with the goal of providing a window as to why art and culture are produced and how they have functioned throughout Japanese history. Lectures will discuss works and sites in detail, contextualizing these artifacts not only within their moment of creation but also their reception through history and in cultures abroad.

Course Overview In this yearlong seminar, students will acquire and develop the knowledge and skills needed for research in Japanese humanities, including the fields of art and architectural history, cultural history, history, literature, and religious studies. The seminar focuses on building several skill sets, including academic writing style and mechanics, summarizing and critiquing a lecture, analyzing an essay, creating an annotated bibliography, and developing research presentation skills. Students will be exposed to a range of field methodologies through seminar meetings, presentations by visiting lecturers, Concepts critiques, thesis-related presentations by second-year students, and readings. A central seminar activity of the fall semester is the completion of the online Japanese Research & Bibliographic Methods course.

Course Overview This course offers training in reading, translating, and understanding primary and secondary sources (in Japanese) related to the history survey course, Japan: A History to 1600. Students will be introduced to relevant reference materials, dictionaries, and other research tools both online and in print.
Primary sources will be used to develop a range of historical skills; students will learn how to critically assess these documents in context and to understand the nature and foundations of historians’ arguments and interpretations. Although students will be expected to prepare short translations of these sources, prior knowledge of kanbun is not required.
Lectures will be supplemented with class discussions, required readings (background reading in Japanese and English as well as primary sources), independent research, as well as museum and site visits.

Course Overview The Meiji Restoration of 1868 is commonly perceived as the beginning of Japan’s modern age. The Meiji period (1868–1912) witnessed a flurry of political, social, religious, and educational reforms which were often based on newly introduced Euro-American ideas and patterns. In the face of these fundamental changes on all levels of society, Meiji elites were at pains to create a sense of historical continuity that could serve as basis for a shared national identity. Thus, the overthrow of the Tokugawa bakufu was justified as a “restoration of monarchical rule” (ōsei fukko) and the new constitutional government was depicted as a return to the direct imperial rule of Japan’s ancient and classical periods. This is only one of many examples of Meiji thinkers legitimizing contemporary practices by tracing them to allegedly ancient Japanese traditions. Closer analysis reveals that in many cases, these traditions were heavily modified or even invented by modern intellectuals. Eric Hobsbawm has shown that nation-building is often accompanied by such inventions of tradition. In this seminar we will test the usefulness of Hobsbawm’s concept for understanding Japanese nation-building.

Course Overview What is pilgrimage? Does it need to have a religious dimension? What about some gambling on the side? Must it be undertaken on foot, or do cars and buses count? What about motivations—devotion, self-cultivation, ancestral rites, repentance; how about sightseeing, patriotism, anime?
This graduate seminar takes a wide lens to these questions so that we can critically evaluate ‘pilgrimage’ as an analytic category of religious (or even secular?) experience. This includes its usefulness, potential shortcomings, and possible paths forward. In this sense, the course offers an exercise in evaluating not only a mainstay of religious studies but an example of how one might do this in other areas of the humanities.
We will explore Edo-period pilgrimage, its modern shaping in Japan (with additional studies from broader East Asia), site/route construction and promotion, the role of money, rituals and motivations, and the pilgrim's experience. We will examine sites and routes related to buddhas, bodhisattvas, and kami, but also connected to heritage, war, power spots, yōkai, and more. You will go to a few. You will even conceptualize one of your own.

授業の概要 "Pictures of the floating world," or ukiyo-e, are doubtlessly one of the most
recognizable and influential stylistic genres of Japanese pre-modern art. This
seminar focuses on multi-color woodblock prints that were created during the Edo
period (1615-1868). We will explore techniques, styles, subjects, and social contexts
of this commoner art and will also delve into the related fields of theater, book
illustration, object design, and cover traditions of image-text interaction that predate the emergence of ukiyo-e.

Course Overview This seminar aims to introduce first-year IDOC students to the theoretical and practical foundations of historical research. Any attempt at being comprehensive is of course futile, but we will pay attention to some of the diverse approaches that have shaped historical work inside and outside Japan, both in premodern and modern times. We will consider what makes someone a 'historian' as well as how and why historians investigate, interpret, and write about the past. We will also pay attention to the underlying--and often unspoken--assumptions embedded in historical research.

Course Overview This course combines research and fieldwork, usually through visits to Kyushu, Kyoto and Nara, and/or nearby Korea. Students both study a rich variety of cultural, historical, and archaeological sites and witness significant performances and events. During this two-year course, all first-year students will participate in a multi-day research field trip. This portion of the course requires extensive preparation before departure (readings, meetings); on site, students make presentations prepared in advance and learn from group discussions and local expertise. The course is subsidized by the program but students should plan on contributing approximately 60,000 yen (for five or six days, excluding meals). During both years of the IMAP program, all students participate in scheduled excursions (several per term) to historical and cultural sites, and events, including burial mounds, castle ruins, pottery kiln towns, early settlements, maritime trade centers, temples, shrines, art exhibitions, and theater performances.
