Course Overview |
This graduate seminar explores the constructed category of religion that was shaped around the globe in the modern period and continues to be the prevailing framework for religion today. Through weekly readings, discussion, and writing, we will tackle questions and contingencies related to this process. What does it mean to say that religion is a modern construct? What was it constructed in relation and/or opposition to? What are the social, political, and personal implications? The construction of this category was not singular to religion. Scholars have considered contingent categories such as secularity, tradition, cultural heritage, the folk, superstition, and more—all of which we constructed on the margins of religion as complementary or oppositional categories. The seminar begins with a look at this process of religion’s construction and differentiation on global, regional (Asia), and national (Japan) scales. We then take spirituality as one example of a contingent category. Alongside this case study, students will select and explore their own categories of interest through designated discussions and essays. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
