Course Overview This course combines research and fieldwork, usually through visits to Kyushu, Kyoto and Nara, and/or nearby Korea. Students both study a rich variety of cultural, historical, and archaeological sites and witness significant performances and events. During this two-year course, all first-year students will participate in a multi-day research field trip. This portion of the course requires extensive preparation before departure (readings, meetings); on site, students make presentations prepared in advance and learn from group discussions and local expertise. The course is subsidized by the program but students should plan on contributing approximately 60,000 yen (for five or six days, excluding meals). During both years of the IMAP program, all students participate in scheduled excursions (several per term) to historical and cultural sites, and events, including burial mounds, castle ruins, pottery kiln towns, early settlements, maritime trade centers, temples, shrines, art exhibitions, and theater performances.
