Course Overview This course introduces students to premodern languages of Japan, including bungo (literary Japanese) and kanbun (literary Sinitic). The main focus of the course is on bungo grammar, but we will also learn the rudiments of kanbun and kundoku (reading by gloss). A command of kobun will enable you to read a huge number of sources that were hitherto inaccessible to you. The newly acquired skills will also give you a deeper understanding of literary production and consumption in premodern Japan and open up new fields of research.
