授業の概要

"Pictures of the floating world," or ukiyo-e, are doubtlessly one of the most
recognizable and influential stylistic genres of Japanese pre-modern art. This
seminar focuses on multi-color woodblock prints that were created during the Edo
period (1615-1868). We will explore techniques, styles, subjects, and social contexts
of this commoner art and will also delve into the related fields of theater, book
illustration, object design, and cover traditions of image-text interaction that predate the emergence of ukiyo-e.
