| Course Overview |
This course offers training in reading, translating, and understanding primary and secondary sources (in Japanese) related to the history survey course, Japan: A History to 1600. Students will be introduced to relevant reference materials, dictionaries, and other research tools both online and in print. Primary sources will be used to develop a range of historical skills; students will learn how to critically assess these documents in context and to understand the nature and foundations of historians’ arguments and interpretations. Although students will be expected to prepare short translations of these sources, prior knowledge of kanbun is not required. Lectures will be supplemented with class discussions, required readings (background reading in Japanese and English as well as primary sources), independent research, as well as museum and site visits.
