Course Overview

This course examines the material culture of Japan with an emphasis on its religious traditions. Through a roughly chronological (but at times thematic) examination of key moments, traditions, and practices spanning over a thousand years, this course attempts to investigate the relationship between people and material culture. What do objects do? What is the relationship between objects and ritual? How do objects shape or reflect status, either secular or religious? In grappling with these (and other) questions, we will engage directly with objects through close analysis and field trips, complemented by close reading of primary and secondary sources and in-class discussion.
