Course Overview Popular forms of religion underwent major ruptures in Japan’s modern period (mid-19th – mid-20th centuries): the separation of Buddhist and Shinto institutions (intertwined until 1868), the formation of religious and secular spheres, the curtailing of ‘superstitious’ practices, the emergence of new religious movements, the legalization of Christianity, and more. The impact of these changes has been transformative in the ways religious and non-religious activities are performed and thought about today. Taking ‘popular religion’ as its focus, this seminar explores the changing religious landscape in modern Japan through readings and discussions of key and recent works. Students will be exposed to primary texts (in Japanese and in translation) and will conduct small-scale research topics of their choice.
