Course Overview The American Short Story

This course will be a survey of some of the best-known short stories, providing insight into many aspects of American culture in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. There will be no textbook. Instead, the teacher will provide the students with links to stories available online, along with background material such as the authors' biographies and essays about the stories, or in some cases print out stories to share with the class. After the first few stories, the students will be assigned in groups to research and provide a presentation to the class about the author and other background. The teacher will conduct surveys to determine which authors or genres the students are most interested in, involving the students in the direction of the course.

Grading will be based on presentations, a final essay, a midterm test, and a final exam, as well as general participation.

Additional Information regarding Evaluation Method : Grading will be based on general participation, presentations, a midterm test, a final essay, and a final exam, each 20% of the grade. Students must show respect for each other, the teacher, and themselves, and come to class prepared to participate fully. Academic misconduct includes plagiarism and using AI to generate significant parts of any classwork--doing so will result in a score of 0 for that assignment and a penalty of 20 points to the grade.
Study Consultation (Office Hours) Study Consultation (Office Hours) : I will only be on Ito Campus on Tuesdays. Students who need to consult with me can do so by email or arranging to meet before 3rd period or after 4th period.
